1. Body Mask (Det)
The Asmat people of Southwest New Guinea called it Body Mask or Det. It was made in mid-20th Century from wood, fiber, leaves and paint. The size of the piece is the of human's height, about 157 cm. The masks are represented the ancestor images in animated way. The festival is called Mask Feast and almost all the people who lived in Asmat region celebrate the feast because it is like their religion and the mask that they made is their art. I find this really interesting, knowing that the the purpose of the feast is to invite the spirit of the dead to the world of living for a feast and celebration and expect the dead to leave the living community by persuasion or force. And until today, they still do the ceremony.
