Online Assignment #2 : Renaissance & Barouqe Art

1. Why was the Medici family so important to the development of the Renaissance?


Because of their success in commerce, the Medici family became the most important, powerful and the wealthiest family in Europe. Through trading and banking, their patronage influenced many artist, sculptors, architectures to paint, sculpt or build something unbelievably beautiful art pieces and get paid for it. During the Renaissance period, a lot of art pieces were created in Florence and most were requested by the Medici family. Renaissance means rebirth and this family has brought back what has been lost or forgotten like when they requested Donatello to make them a free standing sculpture.

2. Why was Donatello's David so revolutionary?


Donatello's David was a free standing sculpture that was requested by the Medici family. It was so revolutionary in 15th century because Donatello was the first person who ever made a free standing sculpture after the Roman. Besides that, the sculpture was naked and created sensation because to the people during the early Renaissance period, it was something brand new.

3. Describe the sculpture very detail.


David was a naked bronze sculpture wears only boots and a shepherd's hat and holding a sword. He stands on a Goliath's head to describe his victory against his enemy. David's body is small and his muscles are barely there because he is supposed to be a young boy who defeated a monster. At the same time, the sculpture is also looking like a girl from different a different angle and also from the body language The pubescent feminine breast makes the statue looking like a female statue if we look at it from the side and also by the way it stands.
