Online Assignment #3 Rembrandt

1.  Describe the portrait of the fur merchant. Why is he "the business man's hero"?

The man in the portrait is a man who owned fur business, Nicolaes Ruts.  In the painting, Ruts is branding himself by wearing the fur. The very small details in the portrait is what telling the audience about what's this painting all about. The glance in Ruts' expression on his face, shows of a slightly impatient intelligence. The shadow on the side of his head makes him look thoughtful. The pink eye lids describes that Ruts doesn't get enough sleep for the good of his investors which says a lot about how great Nicolaes was as a business man and that makes him the business man's hero.

2. What is the mood of the portrait of the 83 year old woman?

I think the mood in portrait of the 83 year old woman is sad. Her glance shows some kind of disappointments about something in her life that she wish she could change and her frown eye brows show that she is a little upset. She knows that she doesn't have much time anymore here on earth.

3. What is Rembrandt communicating in his painting of Sampson and Delilah?

What makes Rembrandt is different from any other artists, is that he looks beyond the pose and body gestures. When everyone else did Samson naked drunk man because naked can represent vulnerability, Rembrandt dresses him and make him look... even more vulnerable. The way he leans his body against his lover shows that he's very much in love with her that he trusted her with his fate but she betrayed him.
