 1. Renaissance
1. RenaissanceVenus and Cupid by Lorenzo Lotto
I personally found this painting really interesting to look at. Venus is relaxing and playing with the cupid which supposed to be her son. The expressions show happiness and I love how the cupid looks like he's having a lot more fun.
This painting was purposely done for a couple in either Bergamo or Venice around 1520s to celebrate a wedding. As we can see that Venus is having some kind of a veil over her hear and a crown. The shell above her head and the rose petal on her thigh represent her attitudes and the myrtle wreath she is giving to the cupid was worn by her. The symbol here is relating to Goddess and marriage.
2. Baroque.
The Lamentation by Scipione Pulzone from Italy 1593
I find the painting from this period is so much more dramatic. The face expression shows a lot of emotion and also the body gesture force the audience to feel the same.
The artist purposely painted this for the chapel of the Passion of Christ in Rome, Italy. The style was made to compliment the interior of the church. The details like tears, the pallor of Christ's body and the crown symbolized for contemplation.
