Online Assignment #1 Asymmetrical Balance, Unity and Scale

1. How does an artist create asymmetrical balance?

Symmetrical balance is when the left and the right side of an artwork is so identical. Asymmetrical balance, the left and the right are not the same. Artists create asymmetrical balance based on their visual, color, weight, and forms. The large form always seems heavier than the smaller form and the only way to balance it, is by adding smaller forms. The image above,  Edgar Degas shows asymmetrical balance. One ballerina on the left is bigger than the ones on the right. And also by color, Degas balanced the paintings by having warm color on the left and cool color on the left. The cool color and smaller ballerina on the right create sense of depth of space in the painting.

2. Describe several ways used to unify an artwork ?

Unity simply means one, condition of oneness, the idea that all element belong together. Ways used to unify an artwork is simply by having repetition of color or shape or the use of pattern. The picture above is one of the example of unity artwork. As they use different type of fruits and put them into color wheel gives the idea that all element belong together.

 3. How is scale change the meaning of an artwork?

Scale, size relation of one thing to another.Scale is what makes things can look so powerful and heavy or tiny and weak. A picture above is an example of a large scale art work by Ron Mueck. It's a sculpture of a baby that he exaggerated in size makes the baby seems so heavy.
